Healthy Homes

The challenge.

The challenge.

Damp, mould, and condensation are a serious problem; they’re major health hazards that can affect the wellbeing of residents. PlaceShapers members were individually taking action to identify and resolve issues, and asked PlaceShapers to create shared resources to help them communicate with residents on what they could do themselves to help prevent and treat issues with damp, mould and condensation. The objective was clear: to deliver a message that empowers residents with knowledge and actionable steps, while also highlighting the critical role of landlords in maintaining safe, healthy living environments.

The solution.

The solution.

The solution was the Healthy Homes toolkit, a carefully crafted collection of resources designed to unify the message on damp, mould, and condensation prevention and treatment. The toolkit combined accessible web content, a handbook translated into seven languages for broader reach, and an engaging animated explainer that simplified complex information. Co-production with residents ensured the content was practical and relatable, while partnerships with the Energy Saving Trust and the Housing Ombudsman added independence to information and alignment with best practice. This comprehensive approach aimed to bridge the conversation gap between landlords and residents, supporting a sector-wide commitment to healthier homes.

The results.

The results.

The Healthy Homes campaign made huge strides increasing awareness and engagement around healthy homes. The creative use of animation and the multi-lingual materials broadened the campaign’s reach, making the information accessible to a wider audience. The initiative led to more informed conversations between residents and landlords, encouraging proactive measures against damp and mould. The campaign’s approachable yet educational tone struck the right balance, leading to practical changes in how guidance is shared. With the toolkit’s launch, PlaceShapers not only spread valuable knowledge but also demonstrated the power of collective effort in the housing sector.

The feedback.

The feedback.

“Collaboration was key in Healthy Homes. Every element of a toolkit on such an important issue had to be carefully considered – the tone, content, accessibility, usability, appearance. Maxmedia were outstanding creative partners to PlaceShapers in this; we valued their approach and expertise.

“The end result is an example of how we are starting to get much better at learning from each other across the sector and, importantly, ensuring what we consider to be good practice is developed in partnership with our residents.”

– Joanna Charlton, Communications Lead, PlaceShapers
